About 13 years ago, Angie and I were seeing a therapist. Life was hard, and working in a high-intensity environment that’s always asking for more time and more energy, challenges your marriage, parenting, and life in general.
Our brilliant therapist (seriously, we love Mark Pruden), suggested we try car-camping as a way to disconnect from the world and just be with each other. We bought a 9-person tent, a camp stove with two burners, chairs, an air mattress and all sorts of plasticware for eating. We hopped in the car, drove to a local state park (Hueston Woods), and soon found ourselves “creeking” and forgetting about the challenges of our day-to-day.
It was a blast and we learned a ton in our first year. Most importantly, camping strengthened our family.
We liked car-camping but it didn’t quite scratch our itch for adventure, so we decided to try backpacking instead. For the uninitiated, the difference between the two is that when you car-camp, you pull your gear out of your car and set it up. You sleep about 20 feet from your car. Backpackers on the other hand strap all their gear to their back and hike 5 miles into the woods. You need to carry all the gear with you.
We looked at our 9-person tent. It weighed about 40 pounds.
We looked at our gigantic 2-burner stove. It wouldn’t fit in a school-sized backpack and probably weighed over 10 pounds.
Forget the rest of the gear, it’s not even worth mentioning.
We had the wrong tools for the journey.
Switching to schooling-from-school to schooling-from-home is a bit like switching from car-camping to backpacking.
It feels similar. It’s still school, right?
But the wrong tools will make for a brutal journey. Frustration and pain await the one carrying the 40-pound tent.
In a COVID-world, nobody knows how school is “supposed to work,” so we aren’t pretending to be experts. We do, however, have 19 years of either homeschooling or schooling-from-home experience and we’d like to share some of the things we’ve learned.
Join us this Sunday for a short webinar where we’ll share 5 Practical Ways to Crush Schooling From Home.

We hope to see you and hope you’re set up to have an amazing school year.
